Author Michael Rockland will be giving a talk about his latest two books, Navy Crazy and An American Diplomat in Franco Spain, at Rutgers University on Friday, October 30, 2015 at 2pm. The presentation will be at the Retired Faculty and Staff Center, ASB II, 57 US Highway 1, New Brunswick, NJ 08901.
Navy Crazy is a different kind of war story depicting the backwardness of military medicine in the mid-1950s. A memoir of a young medical corpsman learning to survive on a locked psychiatric ward for Navy and Marine mental patients at the hospital on the U.S. Naval Base in Yokosuka, Japan from 1955-57. Rockland captures the ward’s atmosphere, its flavor, its culture and its language. A raw personal history not filtered, not for the faint of heart.
An American Diplomat in Franco Spain is filled with delicious behind-the-scenes stories told by author Michael Aaron Rockland who was a cultural attaché at the United States embassy in Madrid, Spain in the 1960s.From Marx Brothers-like attempts to avoid shaking hands with Spain’s dictator in a receiving line, to a search for missing hydrogen bombs, to touching, humanized portraits of celebrities with their hair down, Rockland brings the trivial and the historically significant together into a warm snapshot of a time just as American culture was changing forever.
