Gregg Barrios is to read his poetry at the “A Celebration of Progress” on Friday, November 16, 2018 at 5:30pm at Our Lady of the Lake University on the main front walk. Gregg Barrios will be joined by fellow writers Octavio Quintanilla, Carmen Tafolla, Anel Flores, and John Phillip Santos as part of three day celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the 1968 civil rights hearings on Mexican-Americans in the Southwest at Our Lady of the Lake University.
Gregg Barrios is an award-winning playwright, poet, and journalist. His plays include Rancho Pancho, I-DJ and Ship of Fools. He has received a CTG-Mark Taper Fellowship, a Ford Foundation Grant, and an Artist Foundation Grant for his theater work. He is a 2013 USC Annenberg Getty Fellow, and serves on the board of directors of the National Book Critics Circle. He was inducted into the Texas Institute of Letters.
Gregg Barrios’ collection of poems La Causa is a fascinating interplay of the eras, voices, and regions of Aztlán, all in a simultaneous dialogue with each other. La Causa is an evolution in time, maturity, political sophistication, and expectation an invaluable document to any artistic or historical study of the soul of El Movimiento. The poems in this volume range from sonnets, concrete, songs, ballads, prose and narrative verse. It is a chronicle of the changes made in the aftermath of the Chicano Mexican American civil rights movement.
