(Washington, DC)— On December 10th, the Spanish embassy in Washington, D.C. hosted a luncheon and book discussion for Michael Aaron Rockland and his new book, his thirteenth, AN AMERICAN DIPLOMAT IN FRANCO SPAIN. Once again Rockland filled the room and extra chairs had to be brought in. Rockland conducted the discussion in both English and Spanish. The audience enjoyed his funny anecdotes about his time spent at the U.S. embassy in Madrid, Spain during the 1960s. His stories about Franco and the Cold War incident at Palomares, Spain where the U.S. accidentally drop four atomic bombs. The young diplomats were especially interested in how Rockland spent his time countering the Franco regime as a cultural attache. A lesson to be learned about the power of the arts: they can be disarming.
