RANCHO PANCHO Plays in Albuquerque July 22-August 7

RANCHO PANCHO, Gregg Barrios’ play about Tennessee Williams and his lover Pancho Rodriguez, will be performed July 22-August 7, 2011 in the Wells Fargo Auditorium at the National Hispanic Cultural Center in Albuquerque, New Mexico. RANCHO PANCHO will be directed by Diane Malone, who has directed the play previously in San Antonio, TX and Provincetown, MA. It is being produced by Linda López McAlister’s production company, Camino Real Productions. Starring in this production of RANCHO PANCHO is Benny Briseno as Pancho Rodriguez, Teena Pugliese as Carson McCullers, Santiago Candelaria as Tennessee Williams, and Vivian Nesbitt as Margo Jones.

RANCHO PANCHO is a two-act play that delves into the stormy and passionate relationship of Tennessee Williams and Pancho Rodriguez. For those interested in Tennessee Williams, this is the early part of his career. The play covers the period of 1946-1947 prior to A Streetcar Named Desire. In fact, it is Pancho Rodriguez who inspired Tennessee Williams’ creation of the character Stanley Kowalski in Streetcar. The first act takes place during the summer of 1946 on Nantucket Island where Tennessee Williams and Pancho Rodriguez are summering with their house guest, the novelist Carson McCullers. The second act takes place in Provincetown, MA where Tennessee and Pancho are spending the summer in a cottage they nickname “Rancho Pancho,” hence the title of the play. In the second act you encounter the director Margo Jones, the actor Marlon Brando (who has hitchhiked to Provincetown to audition for A Streetcar Named Desire) and the final break up of Tennessee Williams and Pancho Rodriguez.
