J.v.L. Bell is a Colorado native who was raised climbing Colorado’s 14,000 foot mountains, exploring old ghost towns, and reading stories about life in the early frontier days. She enjoys hiking with friends and family, visiting new places and meeting new people, rafting the rivers of Utah and Colorado, and reading great historical fiction.

A historical novel, The Lucky Hat Mine interlaces the tale of a feisty heroine with frontier legend and lore, making for a suspenseful murder mystery.  The Southern belle heroine answers a wife-wanted ad to escape her life as a common house servant in New Orleans during the Civil War in 1863. She lights out for the Colorado Territory never imagining the perilous trip across the Great Plains or that she would find her intended husband in a pine box. Was he killed in an accident? Or murdered for his gold mine? Stuck in the mining town of Idaho Springs without friends or means, she is beleaguered by undesirable suitors and threatened by an unknown assailant. Her troubles escalate when the brother of her dead fiancé unexpectedly turns up.
