A Novel by Michael Aaron Rockland

Adam Levin is a Jewish college professor going through a divorce in the mid-1970s. He lives in a typical New Jersey suburban town, but nothing is typical about Adam—he’s obsessed with his hatred for Adolf Hitler and anything German. Soon to be divorced, he spends the summer of 1975 traveling the American West in a ’68 Chevy. At the Grand Canyon, he meets and falls deeply in love with a woman who is German and a lesbian. His uncomfortable and bizarre adventures lead to zany and hilarious outcomes, as he reconciles his past with a new future, one divorced from Hitler.

Praise for Married to Hitler

“With Married to Hitler, Michael Rockland achieves an improbable union of the sincere and absurd that dares us all to challenge our most deep-seated preconceptions. Funny, poignant, unpredictable—a rollicking ride of a novel! ”

— Val Emmich, New York Times bestselling author of Dear Evan Hansen: The Novel and The Reminders

“The journey of character Adam Levin—unpredictable, dreamy, edgy, with immersion in war and peace Germany interspersed with travels through 1970s America—is packaged in Michael Rockland’s imaginative writing and graphic gentility. A very special read. ”

—Calvin Schwartz, author Vichy Water and upcoming Journey to Spirit

“Michael Aaron Rockland has written a wild coming of age novel about a middle age Jewish guy for whom all things German are anathema. But what does his hero, Adam Levin, do on his summer vacation in the mid-1970s?  He drives into the Great American West and, at the edge of the Grand Canyon, falls in love with a gorgeous German lesbian. Everything about Married to Hitler is topsy-turvy and surprising. The novel is a hilarious romp and an undoing of childhood fears, male anxieties, and post sexual revolution assumptions.”

—Victoria Redel, author of Before Everything and The Border of Truth
